GENERAL > Useful tips

Here are some useful tips when considering hiring a tradesman or contractor to carry out work for you:

  • Ask for references or testimonials
  • Are they qualified in their specified trade?
  • Check that they are qualified to carry out the work
  • Make sure that the contractor has adequate public liability insurance
  • Is the work guaranteed?
  • Does the work include material, labour and  VAT?
  • How long have they been in business?
  • Ask to see examples of previous work?
  • Be sure to get at least 2 quotes
  • Don't necessarily go for the cheapest quote
  • Be clear about the standard of workmanship that will take place and exactly what you are getting for your money; for example what stages of work will be carried out

This is only a guide to make an informed choice and you should always clarify any areas of concern before going ahead.
